Rewiring work in Riverview splits into two distinct jobs. The older Coverdale and Bridgedale properties need what you'd expect, original ungrounded wiring replaced. The 1960s and 70s subdivisions need something different: aluminum branch wiring properly addressed. Riverview's dominant rewiring issue isn't age-related decay. It's aluminum branch wiring, which was standard practice for exactly the years the town was built out and is still in place in a large number of homes here.
Aluminum wiring: the Riverview issue
Between roughly 1965 and 1975, aluminum was widely used for branch circuit wiring in Canadian residential construction. That window overlaps almost perfectly with Riverview’s build-out, and the result is that a substantial number of Riverview homes have aluminum running to receptacles and switches.
The aluminum itself isn’t the danger. The problem is at the connections. Aluminum expands and contracts more than copper with temperature, and over decades of heating and cooling cycles the connections at devices can loosen. A loose connection generates heat, and heat at a connection point behind a wall is how fires start. The warning signs are worth knowing: receptacles or switch plates that feel warm, a faint burning smell near an outlet, lights that flicker on a particular circuit, or receptacles that have stopped working intermittently.
Full replacement of aluminum branch wiring is one option, but it’s frequently not the necessary one. Approved remediation methods, such as properly rated connectors at every device termination or replacing devices with ones rated for aluminum, address the failure point directly at a fraction of the cost of a rewire. We’ll assess and tell you honestly which your house needs. A contractor who quotes a full rewire without inspecting the terminations first isn’t giving you the information you need.
Older Riverview properties
The Coverdale and Bridgedale housing that predates the subdivisions is a different job. There we see ungrounded circuits throughout, cloth-sheathed cable, service equipment original to the house, and sometimes surviving knob and tube in attics and crawlspaces. Those homes are candidates for genuine rewiring, staged room by room so the house stays livable while the work is underway.
What it involves
Whichever category you’re in, we assess the whole system before quoting rather than pricing off the age of the house. Rewiring often requires a panel upgrade alongside it, since new grounded circuits need somewhere to land and a 1970s 100A panel is usually full. Doing them together is significantly cheaper than sequencing them apart.
Work is permitted and inspected through TISNB, and you get a labeled panel and a circuit map at the end. If insurance prompted the work, we’ll document it in a form your insurer will accept.
