Panel upgrades in Riverview are usually about replacing something aging, not just making room. The town's housing stock is old enough that a large share of original panels are still in service: 100A equipment installed in the 1960s and 70s, often Federal Pioneer, carrying loads nobody anticipated when it went in. Riverview built out largely in the 1960s and 70s, so a 100A service that was more than adequate when the house was new is now carrying a heat pump, a dryer, an electric range, and often an EV charger it was never sized for.
The typical Riverview panel job starts one of three ways: the homeowner wants to add something and there’s no room, an insurer or home inspector has flagged the existing panel, or something has actually failed.
The first is the most common. A 100A service was a reasonable spec for a 1970s bedroom-community house with an oil furnace and modest loads. Add a ductless heat pump, an electric range, a dryer, a finished basement, and a Level 2 EV charger, and it isn’t reasonable anymore. The load calculation tells us whether you’re genuinely over capacity or just out of physical breaker slots. Those are different problems with different price tags, and it’s worth knowing which one you have before committing to a service upgrade.
The second is worth taking seriously. Riverview has a high concentration of Federal Pioneer Stab-lok panels because of when the town was built, and insurers increasingly ask about them at renewal. The third, where something has failed, we treat as urgent. Breakers that trip without an obvious cause, a burning smell near the panel, scorching or discolouration around a breaker, or a panel that’s warm to the touch all warrant a look promptly rather than at the next convenient time. Practically, an upgrade means a planned outage while NB Power disconnects and reconnects the service. We book that ahead and give you a realistic window. The work includes the mast, meter base, and grounding, not just the box on the wall, because the upgrade is only as good as the service feeding it, and on houses of this age the grounding often needs bringing up to current standards too.
Every circuit gets identified and labeled as it’s transferred. On a fifty-year-old Riverview panel that’s usually the first accurate labeling it’s ever had.
