Knob & Tube Wiring Replacement in Riverview, NB

Knob and tube is less common in Riverview than in Moncton's oldest neighbourhoods, because most of Riverview was built well after it fell out of use. Where it does turn up is in the properties that predate the town's postwar growth, the older Coverdale and Bridgedale houses and the farms that were there before the subdivisions. TLB Electric removes and replaces it, and documents the work for your insurer.

What to Expect

An assessment of how much knob and tube is actually live rather than abandoned in place, then full or partial replacement with modern grounded cable. Covers correct handling where insulation has been added over original wiring, and written documentation for insurance.

Riverview's 1960s and 70s subdivisions are well past the knob and tube era, so this work is concentrated in the older Coverdale and Bridgedale properties that predate the town's amalgamation and growth.

Whether you actually have it

Worth setting expectations: if your Riverview house was built in the subdivision boom, which covers most of Riverview Heights and most of what filled in through the 1960s and 70s, you almost certainly do not have knob and tube. That era’s concerns are Federal Pioneer panels and aluminum branch wiring, not knob and tube. Anyone quoting you for knob and tube removal in a 1972 split-level should be able to physically show you where it is.

Where we do find it is in the genuinely older housing: the Coverdale and Bridgedale properties that existed long before the 1973 amalgamation, converted farmhouses, and the scattered older homes along the Hillsborough Road corridor and closer to the river. Those can date to the early 1900s and carry the wiring of their era.

It’s also common to find knob and tube that’s partially live. A previous owner rewired the main floor and left the attic and second-storey runs untouched, or the kitchen got modernized and nothing else did. Part of what we do first is establish how much is actually energized versus abandoned in place, because that determines whether you’re looking at a small job or a full rewire.

Why it needs replacing

Knob and tube has no ground conductor, which rules out grounded three-prong receptacles and any equipment that requires a ground. Its insulation is rubber or cloth that has had a century to become brittle. And critically, it was designed to dissipate heat into open air. It runs through ceramic tubes with air space around the conductors deliberately.

That last point is the one that causes real trouble here. Nearly every older home in the Moncton area has had insulation added to the attic at some point for heating costs, and blown-in or batt insulation packed around knob and tube defeats the design entirely. The wiring can no longer shed heat. This is the single most common dangerous condition we find in these houses, and in a climate where everyone has been adding attic insulation for decades, it’s close to universal in homes that still have live knob and tube up there.

Insurance

Most Canadian insurers will not write a new policy on a home with live knob and tube, and some won’t renew one. If you’re buying an older Riverview property and the inspection flagged it, this is usually the thing that has to be resolved before closing. We can scope and document the work to what your insurer needs, and we’ll give you a straight assessment of how much is genuinely required rather than defaulting to a whole-house rewire quote.
