Hot tubs and pools are among the most code-sensitive things you can add to a house, and the rules exist for good reason. This is the one backyard project where a shortcut can be fatal. Everything metallic in the vicinity has to be bonded together, which is the requirement most often skipped by unlicensed installs and the one that matters most. Bonding is what prevents a difference in potential between, say, a metal railing and the water. This is the part of the job where doing it properly is the entire point.
We see the consequences of shortcuts often enough. The common ones are a tub fed from an existing outdoor receptacle rather than a dedicated circuit, a disconnect mounted at arm’s reach from the water, and bonding omitted entirely. All three fail inspection, and all three are genuinely dangerous.
Panel capacity is the other thing to check first. A hot tub is a substantial continuous load, and on a Dieppe home already carrying a heat pump and an EV charger it may be the addition that requires a service upgrade. Better to know that before the tub is delivered and sitting on the driveway.
For pools, the bonding requirements extend further, to the pool structure, any metal within a defined distance, and the pump and heater equipment. Above-ground and in-ground have different requirements. Tell us which you’re installing and we’ll scope it accordingly.
